On Tuesday, April 30th, the Saints Book Club met for their third and final time this year. Students chose to read The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. This novel was selected during Black History Month, and 15 students in total from Grades 8-12 and four teachers from the English Department read and participated in the Book Club.
This novel features a rich cast of characters from varying backgrounds and cultures, documenting how they struggle and thrive in a racially and culturally-complex community. They are brought together by the kindness of an American Jew, Chona, and her Heaven & Earth Grocery store. Even though the story documents the hardship, bigotry, and struggle of the 1920s and 30s, it is ultimately a story of hope and the power of human connection.
I have an innate desire to see things that have never been seen before. Ideas in ways they haven’t been presented. Stories told in ways they have yet to be heard. I decided to take charge of this, and have been bringing these things to life through my visual stories and digital art.
Art is a universal way of expression that can communicate much more than words. Art lingers; you can come back to it, change it, improve it, destroy it. It’s a mark we leave on the world that lives on in any way, shape, or form. Through art, I can express my ideas and passions, and they will live on.
The world moves fast. If I made art — thousands of words and feelings converging into one frame — that would instantly catch anyone’s eye. Then I might rope them into my own created world, connect with them, and maybe inspire them to create something of their very own.
I make art so I can show people there is no limit to creativity.

Swimming

Congra
ts to a handful of boys who have taken their swimming performance level to new heights this spring. Last month, three of our top JV Swimmers were selected to the SwimBC Prospects Squad and participated in their first opportunity with Team BC, an intensive training camp in Victoria.
Congrats to the boys, their club coaches, and teams below:
Matthew Cao '28 — Pacific Sea Wolves Swim Club
"This year, I had the privilege to attend the Swim BC Prospects Camp hosted in Victoria. Through the practices, I especially enjoyed training and pushing other swimmers. My highlight of the camp would definitely be the conversation that we had with three0 time rowing Olympian Will Crothers and the advice he gave us."
~ Matthew Cao ’28
Tyler Clogg '28 — Canadian Dolphin Swim Club
"Alongside many of my friends, I got the opportunity to experience the formidable training camp hosted by SwimBC. I was extremely grateful to get the opportunity to learn things that many athletes aren't fortunate enough to learn about. Getting to know about mentality, what you can do in and out of the water to improve your performance, and things to talk about with your coach has been extremely useful and has improved the way I pursue swimming. Overall, Prospects was a tough yet valuable experience full of knowledge that I will carry with me for as long as I am in this sport, and I am looking forward to the next camp!"
~Tyler Clogg ’28
Preston She '27 — Vancouver Pacific Swim Club
"This year, I had the distinct honour of attending the SwimBC Prospects camp hosted by SwimBC in Victoria from April 12-14. Activities there included the normal (gruelling workouts), but also unique dryland and recovery sessions from CSI Pacific, Olympian talks from Head To Head, and team meals/bonding time. For me, it was a great way to connect with like-minded swimmers from across the province and a fun weekend of hard work!"
~ Preston She ’27
Another exciting update is that later this month, Ivan Sun '24 will be racing the best in the country at the Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials in Toronto! More details, previews, and how to follow along with his progress to come...
