Senior School Water Polo

    • Photo

St. George’s School offers any interested boys the opportunity to participate and compete in the sport of Water Polo. We offer the following opportunities:

Term 2 - Recreational Swimming/Water Polo

This is a recreational co-curricular choice, which is for both experienced players to get in some pre-season training, as well as developmental and new players wishing to give the sport a try before committing to the Term 3 competitive season.

As Water Polo is currently not a BCSS sport, the Team competes in high school-based tournaments offered by Water Polo West and the BC Water Polo Association.

The above secondary-school tournaments are co-educational, so we have happily welcomed girls to our team from local schools in years past.

  • Goals

    In the spirit of the School’s mission — Building Fine Young Men. One Boy At a Time — the goals of the Swimming Program are to:
    • develop fine young men using aquatic skills via Water Polo as a vehicle for personal growth;
    • develop each boy’s sense of self-worth as a valuable member of a dynamic Water Polo program;
    • create a culture and identity that future boys and teams will aspire to follow;
    • create a life-long love for the sport as a recreational/intramural or competitive option post-high school for those that are at that level, and a healthy lifestyle option for all.
  • Seasonal Snapshot

    While each Water Polo season presents new opportunities for competitive events, a typical season is generally as follows:

    • Term 2 (Recreational) — 10–11 weeks from December to the end of February.
    • Term 3 (Competitive Season) — 10 weeks from the start of March to the start of June.
    • Occasional scrimmage opportunities, usually at Saints Pool.
    • 1–2 weekend Secondary School tournaments.
  • Tryouts

    Tryouts during the first week of each term will simply involve a swim test to ensure the boys have a base level of skill. Returning boys are all exempt from tryouts.
  • Team Selection

    All boys eligible for scrimmages. However, the season-ending secondary-school tournaments may require selection pending our total team numbers.
  • Practice Format

    In-water practices are offered up to 3 days per week, usually after school from 3:30–5:00 pm and occasional mornings before school from 6:45–8:15 am. A full practice schedule is available closer to the start of the season. Most practices will be open to the full team, some may be split if our total numbers and skill levels require it in a given year. Additional fitness and dryland practices may also be scheduled from time to time. We will also aim to offer midday Pro-D sessions and clinics occasionally.
  • Key Events

    • BCWPA High School Championships — late May
    • Water Polo West High School Championships — early June
